«My childhood, ever since the infant years up til’ the fifth grade I have spent in the mining region of the far north, near a town called Inta. My family lived in a on old Finnish-style house, surrounded by infinite tundra under the bright Northern skies. Perhaps, that influenced my colour preferences in painting; sense of restraint, disciplined precision, and understated beauty.

What inspires me to create? I’m not even sure as I haven’t really thought about it… That’s just simply how I live— I don’t see myself without this activity. I also do not consider it as a job in its general sense, to me, its a lifestyle. When I see the beauty that surrounds, in me appears a desire to capture, keep it in in my memory, preserve that particular emotion. I adore traveling for the matter of plain-air, meeting new people and discovering places. Common activities with fellow artists stimulates and helps my self-development, it makes me re-consider some matters. I believe plein-air painting is essential for artists; it not only fosters imaginative growth but also extends an artist’s creative journey.

During the wintertime I prefer working in the studio. Alone. In this period I create rather large-scale canvases whilst using material I brought with me from my journeys.

My favourite artists are Ilya Repin , Isaac Levitan , Nicolai Fechin , Claude Monet , Frits Thaulow , Vasily Polenov ...- you can learn a lot from all these great masters… An artist’s life, tastes, and preferences naturally shape their work. Say, if five artists gather in one place, each will create something entirely different if working freely for themselves. That is because every and each is going to see something of their own.

I deeply admire architecture and hold great respect for the craft. I believe this appreciation is vivid in my cityscapes.

I have been in the Fine Arts for over forty years now and can’t recall any blocks that would prevent me from creating. Nothing more than life’s challenges could. distract me from what I’m doing and whatever comes my way it does not occur the creative work of mine. It has to do with the lack or even absence of energy, that was consumed during overcoming the emerging difficulties.

Despite the fuss which happens in the outside world, you need to return to the studio, immerse yourself in the work flow, and just focus; do something that needs to be done other than painting— stretch the canvases, paint and restore frames, and countless other things. This helps getting back to shape and restore the strength. At such times, I enjoy visiting exhibitions, especially those of old masters, as well as exhibitions by my colleagues.

Every artist defines success in their own way. It varies from one’s goals. Some ambitious colleagues aim to leave their mark in the history of art, which drives them to seek new forms. Personally, I don’t share that pursuit.

For me, the definition of success is to get as close as possible to the nature, to grasp enough courage and risk to express its essence through my own mood. If the kind observer can feel that connection, I consider my work fulfilled. What matters the most to me is that my art is not just a beautiful picture in the end but something that evokes feelings in the viewer, preferably positive ones. We are now living in a very difficult times as the world snaps to chaos, flips from head to toes; as consequence the people are literally going insane. Art should soothe and bring peace, cure souls and harmonise the life and the space around it. One should not multiply negative energies. A true Artist should reveal the beauty of this world, and how we all should be guarding and cherishing its fragility.»
